Building Project
The building was originally built in the 1970s and then redeveloped in the 1990s to provide a ground floor shopping plaza and a first floor multiplex cinema. The building is a total of 2637.6m2 divided into two major areas of floor space: 903.5m2 of retail space, and 1734.1m2 of the former cinema complex now used for Hutt City Baptist Church.
There is a need to improve the general appearance and appeal of the property as the outside, especially the street frontage, has become quite run down. This is important for the viability of the commercial tenancies and the image of the church itself. Other construction work centres on the removal of the wall between what were theatres 3 and 4. This requires the fitting of a truss to carry the load previously supported by the wall. This combined space must then be fitted out as an auditorium including providing the appropriate seating, acoustics, lighting and sound.
We are aware of the need to avoid the facilities being dominated by a large auditorium. Therefore we intend ensuring that the auditorium and ministry spaces are kept in balance, so that both our children and youth ministries have the quality of space they need to grow alongside our adult congregation.
The specific plans for development are detailed in the concept drawings prepared for the church by our architect, John McClean of the BSM Group.
Our priorities for the development are:
- Development of the auditorium on level 1
- Tidying up the entrance foyer and kitchen facilities on the ground floor
- Refurbishing the street frontage on High Street.
